The Saint Benedict Homeschool Association began over six years ago when three Catholic homeschooling families saw a purpose in making Catholic homeschoolers aware of each other, so that the families could lend one another encouragement and support. One of our founding members, and a convert at that, suggested St. Benedict as our patron saint, even before any of us realized that he and his sister St. Scholastica have been renowned through the centuries as special patron and patroness of schoolchildren. Therefore, some of us consider the name of our organization as a special grace and gift of Divine Providence.
Our roster has included at one time as many as 21 families in the Elizabethtown/Fort Knox area with members coming from as far away as Hodgenville and Brandenburg.
Activities of SBHA have included joint field trips, member-coordinated workshops and celebrations, and a tradition of care and support--from members' bringing a week's worth of meals to new mothers, to lending a hand with child care in times of bereavement, or taking up a collection when a family experiences financial hardship.
In 2010, two members undertook to coordinate the very first Kentucky Catholic Homeschooling Conference, with their goal being to make it an annual event. The first conference featured favorite Catholic authors and homeschooling experts, attracted Catholic homeschoolers from as far away as Tennessee, and brought in almost 100 vendors of Catholic and other homeschooling curricula.
